When finding sites on the internet look for
•WHO- Is this person an authority or recognized organization?
•WHAT- Is the information accurate, relevant, and unbiased?
•WHEN- When was the information published or last updated and do the links work?
•WHERE- Where does the information come from?
•WHY-Why should I use this information
(questions from Kathy Shrock’s 5W’s of website evaluation)
Google- use advanced search (site:.edu or .gov)
Books- Google Books books scanned for online use
Different search engines

History Fair 2010 Innovation in History
Laura Holton a school librarian in Cache Valley has put together some great sources for your history day project. Visit her wiki for primary sources and other great websites.
One of my favorite sites for inventors The Lemelson Center.
1. Once you have a broad idea for a topic read an encyclopedia or other secondary source for good background knowledge and to help you think of other keywords.
World Book and Compton’s Britannica (SIRS Discoverer) are available through Pioneer.
2. Remember good search strategies. Brainstorm to come up with your keywords. You may need to narrow or broaden them, use “”, boolean searches (and, or, not), etc.
Here’s a brief overview of these strategies which can be useful when searching databases.
3. Some sites to try:
Virtual LRC
Librarian’s Internet Index
Internet Public Library
Library Spot
Academic Index
DeepDyve (ask parents)
WorldCat
CompletePlanet (deep web directory)
Science
NSDL
4. After you have specific key words don’t forget EBSCO and Library of Congress (primary sources) found on Pioneer.
5. Don’t forget to try different search engines or enable special Google features
